The Tempo Of Reflection

Scrolling and Trolling

April 25, 2007 · 1 Comment

A friend of mine, bless his heart, told me today that he is disappointed at the drop in my blogging rate. Did I say friend? Actually make it my new best friend J

So in order to end this writer’s block and to come up with something to write, I took to trolling the web. How is trolling different from browsing? Glad you asked, be happy to answer. Here’s the difference, IMHO.

Browsing is something I generally associate with viewing data. You scroll through documents, you view data; you generally know what you’re looking for, at least in a large context. Like, you may browse for news, entertainment, and other such pursuits.

Trolling, on the other hand, I think of as “lurking”. This is when you are at loose ends, you don’t know what you’re looking for, but you get the feeling that you’ll know it is the “right” thing when you see it.

Let me elaborate further, since this is my blog and I can write as much nonsense as I want J

When you go into the snacks aisle in the supermarket, looking for chips, you “browse” through the brands available and select one. That is what I think of as browsing.

Now suppose you were in the mood to eat something. But you don’t know what exactly it is that you really want to eat. Ever had that feeling? No? Lucky you! This happens to me a lot. I will run a mental list through my mind – I want a salty snack, but not chips. I don’t want a biscuit… and so on, but won’t really be sure what it is I want. Finally I walk up and down the aisles and see something and grab it. This is what I call trolling J

The moral of this story – or the point of this blog – whichever way you want to look at it, my dear friends, (are you listening my new best friend?) is that I am trolling for some matter, and as soon as I find the right thing, it will be here J

For the silver lining, I am going to Novotel’s Thai Festival for dinner tonight and I am sure I will have a review for it posted tomorrow.

Meanwhile, keep it coming friends, I get a huge kick out of reading the comments on this blog.
